Wonderful YA Fantasy
By Booklover
In the Shadows is the second installment in EMC's Lark series. At the start of this book, Mia has already discovered her Elvish roots and is trying to figure out a balance between her new life and her old life.

This book is classic YA Fantasy. I stress that because lately it seems like YA books have been morphing into Adult books--lots of heavy subject matter and plotlines that seem to be more interested in shocking a reader than in telling a story. This book takes me back to the reasons I fell in love with the genre in the first place. The main character, Mia, is a true teenage girl and her concerns (though vast and spanning two worlds) are in many ways, teen concerns. Cheerleading, what should I wear, boys, friendships, etc. It's refreshing, it's sweet... it's fun.

Don't get me wrong... there's also Elvish adventure. And I don't want to say what that is or I'll give the plot away.

The love story in this book isn't so much a triangle as it is a circle... for me at least. Haha. I say that because every time I've read a YA story where the girl's heart is being tugged in two directions, I ALWAYS have a strong opinion about at least one of the guys. In this case... not so much. I love them both for their differences and strengths and that's one of the reasons that I love following this series.

Five enthusiastic stars! Loved so much about this story and can't wait to read more.

LOVE IT!
By Amazon Customer
Erica Cope strikes again with a great follow up to her novel Lark. It's hard writing a sequel and you never know what you are going to get with one. But this one keeps the plot moving, stays true to the character's characterizations, and kept Grey in it. I'm on Team Grey - sorry Team Jacoby! It's def. a good idea to buy Lark before In the Shadows, but not a must.

Great job!

So dissapointed.
By E. ochoa
So the first book lost points for the kinda sorta wannabe love triangle, but the story was cute and Jacoby was fun so I finished it. It was cute, Jacoby was a good foil for her best friend who's pretty bland and flat. Anyway the decisive (or so I thought) love interest at the end made me look forward to picking up the second to see where Larks adventures take her.....and here we are.

I have no words, but I do offer a sincere and utter disgust with the bandwagon behavior authors are displaying. What, you don't believe me? Check out the idiotic check list for YA and call me crazy- but gee it matches the formulaic layout for.....everything lately.

Every book must have a love triangle. Check.
The triangle MUST exist even if it is forced, awkward and destroys otherwise decent supporting characters particularly best friends. Check.
The triangle must go to ridiculous unbelievable, offensively vapid and transparent lengths to endure over multiple books. Check.
The girl MUST try out each guy before eventually at some point in the far future maybe deciding which she wants to mess around with long term before potentially switching back. Several times. Check.
Excessive, nauseating and overdone angst-y turmoil as the MC debates the merits of each guy as the MC has "feelings" for both at the same time....for SEVERAL books. Check.

*Sigh* Well that actually sums up my issues with this book pretty well. Don't get me wrong, I am not denying several facts: The author can write. She had a good storyline. Her characters were pretty relatable (except when the heroine monologued extensively before selfishly making several consecutively stupid choices). But it was tolerable, she's young not very intelligent, all of the above is room to grow. I hope. I was pretty happy when I thought this book bucked the trend with a mild almost triangle that was decisively settled in the first book so we could enjoy a pretty good elf style love story. The relationship developed and it was cute, and a reasonable compliment to the other story lines. She faced the challenges presented by her evil uncle and his army of dark elves, a devastating choice to save the world, crazed traitors in the castle itself... Plenty of fodder for a great story there right? Nope not good enough- back to the triangle and a total lack of originality.

Oh and Jacoby! What the heck was up with Jacoby?!?!? Really- He literally smirked or sly smiled at EVERY thing she said, he had no other expressions (except puppy dog eyes at the very end). Sly smiled???? That isn't even an expression! AND those are jerk or lame villain expressions! It was creepy and not romantic or cocky or whatever the author was going for. Besides he wimps out the moment he thinks Grey is moving in. Just flops like a wet blanket. He's NOT the character we loved in the first book.

But hey, I really love how this new trend for (mandatory/forced) love triangles shows young womens' strengths. You know decisiveness, character, determination and dedication, commitment, loyalty....
Oh wait. It doesn't.
