About the Author
Ann Cleeves is the author behind ITV's VERA and BBC One's SHETLAND. She has written over twenty-five novels, and is the creator of detectives Vera Stanhope and Jimmy Perez -- characters loved both on screen and in print. Her books have now sold over 1 million copies worldwide. Ann worked as a probation officer, bird observatory cook and auxiliary coastguard before she started writing. She is a member of 'Murder Squad', working with other British northern writers to promote crime fiction. In 2006 Ann was awarded the Duncan Lawrie Dagger (CWA Gold Dagger) for Best Crime Novel, for Raven Black, the first book in her Shetland series. A great series

There is something unique about this series, set in the Shetland Islands off England. The descriptions of the sea, the scenery, the houses, and the quaint and mostly quiet lifestyle are helpful in creating the setting. Our inspector hero is back after battling depression ensuing from the death of his lady love. He gingerly gets back into investigating two murders after taking time off to recover, all the while continuing to take care of her daughter, Cassie, because the natural father doesn't want to be bothered with anything but visits. The islands may seem calm and sedate but passions run deep and there are crimes to solve.

Fans will enjoy this, but not find it up to Ms. Cleeves's usual quality

I probably would give this three or three and a half stars if this was the first of Ann Cleve's Shetland Island series that I had read, but I enjoyed revisiting the characters and settings from the four previous novels, so I enjoyed it more than a newcomer might. On the positive side, the story is engaging for most of the novel. A reporter who had grown up in the islands but moved to London is murdered during a visit back home. There are a number of realistic suspects, and the identity of the actual killer is plausible. (It irritates me when the killer turns out to be the most random person in the novel simply for purported surprise value.)
Ms. Cleves paces the story well as the beginning of the novel develops the characters nicely, and the pace quickens as clues or leads are revealed toward the end of the book. (Another pet peeve of mine is lazy character development, e.g., on page one the guy kicks a dog, hurls a racial epithet, so we know he is a jerk.) I felt that I knew the characters and by the end of the book the I was anxiously reading as quickly as I could in order to find out what happened next. I liked seeing Jimmy Perez return to this novel with an interesting change in his character due to an event in the preceding novel in the series. I also enjoyed the way Ms. Cleeves is developing Sandy's character as he starts to take more pride in his duties and is trying to grow into his job.
Finally, the setting--the Shetland Islands--makes the novel. Ms. Cleves does a wonderful job of placing you in the rugged windswept islands. I felt like I needed to put on an overcoat while reading to protect myself from the elements.
As for the negative, the ending seemed forced. As I said above, the identity of the killer seemed realistic, but the motive and events leading up to the killing did not. It seemed like there were two or three other possible endings that could have produced a more satisfying ending.
In the end, Dead Water reminded me of some of PBS's fantastic Poirot or Miss Marple episodes where there are some plot holes or forced endings--despite the imperfections, I love watching them for the settings, and the characters. With Dead Water, I enjoyed my return to the Shetland Islands to see the old familiar characters, and meet some new ones, even though I wish the ending had been better. If you have not read any of the Shetland Islands mysteries, they are generally very good. I would recommend reading them in order and, if you like them, pick up Dead Water.

Dead Water Ho Hum

I am a huge Anne Cleeves fan. I have read the entire Shetland Island mystery series. This is the only one that I found to be disappointing. I just could not care about one single character except Sandy in this book. Cleeves is clearly bringing him along and I look forward to seeing what happens with him next. Perez is realistic as grief stricken and in shock. But the plot line plodded and the end was a dud to say the least. Just not plausible at all. I will continue to read Cleeves but I rate this one as nearly a miss.
