A SUBSTANTIAL RE-WRITING AND EXPANSION OF YOUNG'S EARLIER BOOKS
By Steven H Propp
Davis A. Young is Professor of Geology at Calvin College. He is also the author of Creation and the flood: An alternative to flood geology and theistic evolution and The Biblical Flood: A Case Study of the Church's Response to Extrabiblical Evidence. He is also the son of Edward J. Young, Professor of Old Testament at Westminster Theological Seminary.

He wrote in the Preface to this 2008 book, "[This book] is virtually a total rewrite of Christianity and the Age of the Earth... The goal of our book is to convince readers, on both biblical and geological grounds, of the vast antiquity of the amazing planet that is our God-given home. Along the way we point out the flaws of so-called young-Earth creationism... acceptance of modern geological conclusions regarding an ancient earth is by no means incompatible with biblical Christianity." (Pg. 10-11)

He suggests, "The fact that Genesis 1 is so laden with symbolic numbers, repetitive structure, anthropomorphic and metaphorical elements, allusions to ancient Near Eastern concepts, and the literary convention of seven days... leads us to believe that it is not the intent of Genesis 1 to provide the kind of detailed factual information ... that would be useful in developing a scientific reconstruction of the historical unfolding of the universe. Genesis 1, however, is decidedly historical in the sense that God DID make the universe and DID make all the various entities within it... So, the charge that the day-age, framework or the analogical-day view or views other than the traditional view undermine the historicity of the creation account is unfounded... they differ from the traditional view only in terms of the mode of presentation of the events of creation." (Pg. 178-179) Later, he adds, "the author could use a literary device built around the ordinary twenty-four hour days of human experience while at the same time mentioning events that lasted more than twenty-four hours... The author was not trying to convey chronological information because that is not how the device functioned in ancient Near Eastern literature." (Pg. 202) [He admits that he no longer endorses the "day-age" theory (pg. 157), and says "Clearly we have sympathy for aspects of the ("analogical-day" theory and "framework" theory)."]

Of young-earth creationist claims that the geological strata are explained by the Flood, he points out, "there are many blatant incongruities ... For example, pterosaurs... are limited in their stratigraphic distributions to the Mesozoic. Presumably they were as mobile as many birds... and so should be preserved throughout the Cenozoic... why are there absolutely no angiosperm fossils preserved in Carboniferous coal deposits?... Why did a catastrophic global Flood not mix a few angiosperms with standard Carboniferous plant communities?" (Pg. 240) He observes that the La Brea Pits deposit "does NOT contain 'all kinds of living and extinct animals.' There are no dinosaurs or pterosaurs, for example, nor are there any marine creatures whatsoever. The deposit represents... a local ecological assemblage." (Pg. 255)

He rejects critiques of radiometric dating: "In the absence of explicit biblical assertions to the effect that God miraculously speeded up radioactive decay rates or miraculously speeded up the expansion of the universe during the time of creation and the Deluge, [the] appeal to miracle is completely ad hoc... although we totally agree that God has performed miracles and is free to act as he chooses, we are very suspicious of the validity of any position that needs to invoke miracles arbitrarily to prop up a theory that, while desperately wanting to be considered scientific, not only lacks evidential support but also flies in the face of abundant scientific evidence that demolishes the theory in question." (Pg. 400) He argues, "At the very worst, all that discrepant ages indicate is that ... radiometric dating methods are not as accurate as we might like. The fact that discordances do occur... however, should grant little solace to proponents of a young Earth for the simple reason that, almost invariably, the ages obtained by different methods for the same body of rock are on the order of hundreds of thousands to a few billions of years." (Pg. 441)

He concludes, "neither Christians nor non-Christians should become upset over presumed discrepancies between the Bible and the created order... Christians affirm that all parts of the Bible agree and are in harmony with one another, but they do not always hear this harmony fully. There are statements and teachings in the Bible that Christians have difficulty fitting together. Although there are many examples of biblical difficulties that Christians cannot fully resolve to their satisfaction , they still recognize that the overarching message of the Bible rings true. For example, there are a number of parallel accounts of the same event in the different Gospels... Anyone who has attempted to work out a perfectly consistent and coherent sequence of the events that occurred on the first Easter morning from the accounts... in the four Gospels will experience some puzzlement. No one has yet been able to work out a completely satisfactory chronology. Nevertheless, the Christian church has rightly proclaimed the bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ... because the Bible teaches it." (Pg. 484-485)

Far more detailed than his earlier works, this book is "MUST READING" for anyone on ANY side (if on any "side") of the young earth/old earth controversy---whether or not one always agrees with Young and his co-author.
